A three month exhibit at the Hispanic Cultural Center at the History & Literary Arts Building.The exhibit will open on June 18, 2010 and close on September 18, 2010.The exhibit entitled New Mexico’s African American Legacy, Visible, Vital and Valuable will showcase the African American History of Las Cruces New Mexico.
- Three upcoming symposiums along with the exhibit scheduled from 1-5 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Building of the Hispanic Cultural Center:
a) July 31 – New Mexico’s African American Educators from Segregation to Reservation to Integration
b) August 21 – Barbers and Beauticians part of the economic and social fabric of the African American Community.
c) September 11 – The impact of New Mexico’s African American athlete locally and nationally.
- The 2nd annual Blues and Barbeque Fundraiser Festival held on July 4th at Mr. Powdrell’s Barbeque House.Featuring food, vendors, entertainment, silent auction, activities for the children.
- Provide a yearly scholarship to the National History Day Competition sponsored by the NM Humanities Council. The scholarship is awarded to any middle school or high school competitor who submits a comprehensive written entry involving African American History.
- Collaborate and present with Origins and Legacies, an organization involved in the collection of oral history and the science of conducting oral history interviews run by Dr. Rose Diaz.
- Collaborated with Regina Turner of New Mexico’s Human Rights Project in the Anne Frank Exhibit, 2/2010 by presenting a panel presentation. Dr. Jamal Martin and D’Ontae Sylvertooth, speaker on “The Courage to Stand in 2010.”
- Continuing conversations with the City of Albuquerque concerning the Rosenwald building purchased in ’09 by city from Capital Outlay for three entities: Holocaust Museum, Human Rights Educational Foundation and AAMCCNM. The project is now stalled by the city since 11/2009.
